The cyclone, which recorded wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to hit the coast by midweek, according to weather experts.

Advisories of power cuts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as Melissa brings up to thirty inches of rain and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Seek shelter now," residents have been told.

The cyclone is the thirteenth cyclone in this year's Atlantic season, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.

A Category 5 cyclone is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

"Several days of destructive gusts and heavy rainfall has started and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and numerous rock slides," advised climate experts.

The country's head of government the official commented: "I realize that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: worry is natural.

"But the optimal approach to address nervousness and any apprehension and worry is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being instructed to secure their homes with protective bags and timber panels, and to gather essentials.

Broader Impact

Alerts are also in effect for regions of Haiti encompassing the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and the eastern part of Cuba, where the hurricane is projected to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Rock slides presently generated by the storm have already killed two in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Melissa is predicted to cross the island nation by the middle of the week before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have reduced to a category three storm.
