The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
